CT higher ed system cuts 24 admin. jobs

Twenty-four administrative positions in Connecticut’s higher education system are being eliminated under a plan that reorganizes how the state’s universities and community colleges are managed,  The Associated Press reports.

The state Board of Regents for Higher Education says cutting the jobs will save nearly $5 million. Most are executive-level spots such as assistant vice chancellors.

Michael Meotti, the regents’ vice president, says it’s part of an effort to cut administrative costs and redirect money into hiring faculty for Connecticut’s 12 community colleges and four regional universities.

Their management recently was combined as separate oversight boards were eliminated and the new Board of Regents took over. The University of Connecticut continues to be run by a separate board of trustees.

The Connecticut Mirror first reported the job cuts on its Web site.
