CT health exchange reports heavy first-day traffic

Access Health CT said it received nearly 2,000 phone calls and its website received more than 28,000 unique visits Monday, the first day of insurance enrollment under the federal Affordable Care Act.

The web traffic was more than double the typical traffic the website has seen in an average week, officials said. The state exchange received 167 applications for coverage during the day. Of those, 83 were for subsidized commercial plans and 84 were for Medicaid plans.

New outlets across the country had reports of technical problems accessing the state exchange websites Monday.

Access Health CT reported an average page-load time of half a second, though it admitted there were sporadic issues with accessing the site.

“[Monday] was not without its bumps, but as far as launches go for a project of this size, we were pleased,” Kevin Counihan, CEO of Connecticut’s exchange, said in a statement.

The federal government’s health insurance portal, HealthCare.gov, had 2.8 million visits Monday, while 81,000 people called the federal call center.
