CT health centers get $1.6M for uninsured

The 13 Connecticut health centers will share a $1.6 million federal grant to help them enroll uninsured state residents in new health plans, the Department of Health and Human Services announced.

The centers, which operate 185 sites, served 329,000 patients last year, 23 percent of whom were uninsured.

The new health plan options are offered by Connecticut’s new Health Insurance Marketplace, called Access Health CT. The exchange’s creation was mandated by the federal Affordable Care Act.

The centers will use the money to hire 28 workers to assist more than 23,000 state residents enroll in affordable health care plans, HHS said. They will also help determine if residents are eligible for Medicaid and other programs and determine if any financial assistance is available.

The grants are part of a nationwide program that will disburse $150 million to similar facilities in other states.
