In what’s generally viewed as a positive economic sign, the spread between newly registered businesses and dissolving businesses is widening in Connecticut.
During the first six months of 2019, net business starts — the difference between businesses that form or register (starts) and those that dissolve or withdraw (stops) — Â was 15,493, according to the latest data from the Secretary of the State.
That’s the highest half-year figure since at least 1980.
Net business starts set a quarterly record of 8,033 in the first quarter of this year, which was followed by a near-record 7,460.

Domestic limited liability companies are by far the most prevalent in the state, with net formation of 7,053 in the first half of the year.
In Hartford County, meanwhile, net starts are also trending up, reaching a record 3,614 in the first half of 2019, the data show.
