The state will award $5.3 million in grants to 17 towns for capital improvements to roads, sidewalks, buildings and parks, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s office announced.
The grants are a part of the Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP), and represent the second round of awards this summer.
The following communities will receive money:
Bethel: $250,000
The town will replace stairs at the CJ Hurgin Municipal Center and replace and build sidewalks at the center, the intersection of Main Street, Maple Avenue and Chestnut Street and at the Bethel Police Department.
Canaan: $200,000
The town will make repairs to the South Canaan Meeting House, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Canterbury: $270,000
The town will construct a public works garage to replace a 53-year old garage.
Clinton: $500,000
The town will do streetscape improvements, including sidewalks, signage, lighting, landscaping for the downtown business district area and will also bury some utility lines.
Colebrook: $77,500
The town will complete renovations and exterior painting of the Colebrook Historical Society Museum building, which helps finish a project started with a previous STEAP grant.
Darien: $400,000
The town will construct an aquatic habitat and remove sediment within the Goodwives River watershed from Upper Pond. The grant will build on existing investments to restore aquatic habitat and reopen migratory fish access as well as prevent contaminated sediment from washing downstream to Darien Harbor and Long Island Sound.
Deep River: $400,000
The town will add a pavilion, bathrooms, recreation areas, sport fields and a walking trail to Plattwood Park.
Ellington: $250,000
The town will build a 1,000-square-foot addition to the Ellington Human Services building for offices, storage, a conference room and a bathroom.
Glastonbury: $250,000
The town will build public access and parking to four open space parcels — the former Arbor Acres, Grayledge, Longo Farm and Slocumb properties, which were recently acquired by the town.
Litchfield: $160,000
The town will add a washroom with shower facilities to the Bantam Fire Company and make it ADA-compliant, allowing for the building to be used as a long-term emergency shelter.
Montville: $250,000
The town will build sidewalks along Chesterfield Road to provide pedestrian connections between Montville High School and Leonard J. Tyl Middle School as well as add crosswalks and trails to the Fair Oaks Community Center and the Montville Conservation Center.
North Canaan: $400,000
The town will restore the historic Canaan Union Station, which was damaged by arson in 2001
Salisbury: $500,000
The town will clean up a former dry cleaning establishment that is blighted and a health hazard. The town hopes to build affordable housing at the site.
Seymour: $168,000
The town will replace sidewalks along various roads.
Sherman: $69,000
The town will make repairs and upgrades to the Sherman Playhouse.
Wallingford: $181,000
The town will design and build roadway and parking improvements at Veterans Memorial Park. The project will reconfigure the roadway and create additional parking while improving vehicular and pedestrian safety. The project also includes related site work and landscaping.
Westbrook: $500,000
The town will continue its Town Center Enhancement Project, which includes the design and construction of a municipal parking lot and relocating Knothe Road.
