A group of Connecticut Republicans and members of a conservative think-tank say they are filing suit to challenge the constitutionality of the newly adopted state budget, The Associated Press reports.
The plaintiffs announced they are filing their lawsuit Friday in Hartford. They say the two-year, $40.1 billion budget violates the state constitution because it contains a $2 billion gap.
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy signed the budget into law Wednesday. He and Democratic leaders of the General Assembly hope to fill the shortfall with concessions from state employees.
Administration officials previously planned to send notices of potential layoffs Friday to about 4,000 workers, but later decided to hold off while discussions continued with labor leaders.
About 100 others, mostly non-union managers, were also expected to lose their state jobs Friday as part of state agency consolidations.
