Connecticut and New York gas prices remain above the national average, as consumers and businesses are paying more at the pump due to rising oil costs.
AAA reported this week an increase in the nationwide average for a gallon of regular gas to $3.75, which is up from last week’s average of $3.59 per gallon.
National prices last month averaged $3.54 per gallon, but are still trending lower than the average one year ago, when they stood at $4.22 per gallon. The national record was set at $5.01 per gallon in June 2022.
According to AAA, the increased averages are due to higher oil prices, which have recently gone into the mid-$70s per barrel.
“Gas demand barely budged from last week, yet compared to this time in 2022, it is higher nationwide except for the Gulf Coast, Texas, and New Mexico,” according to AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross. “Some industry experts speculate that scorching temps in that region are keeping people off the road.”
Connecticut drivers are filling up at the statewide average last week of $3.76, which is the highest for the New England states. The state’s average on Tuesday was still climbing, at $3.77 per gallon, according to AAA.
The prices are trending up, with an increase over last week’s average of $3.70, and last month’s average of $3.68. But these prices at the pump are still lower than one year ago, when a gallon in Connecticut topped out at $4.52.
Tolland County has Connecticut’s lowest average, at $3.72 per gallon, with Hartford County in the middle at $3.76, and Fairfield County seeing the highest average in the state, at $3.79, according to AAA reports.
New York leads the Northeast with a statewide average of $3.81. California has the highest statewide average at $4.99, with Mississippi the lowest at $3.25.
