Greater Hartford gasoline prices dropped back below $4 per gallon this week, after turmoil in July saw the price bump above the milestone, according to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report.
The price per gallon of regular unleaded among Greater Hartford gas stations was $3.974 per gallon, down from $4.032 per gallon the previous week.
Gasoline prices in the Greater Hartford region spiked in late winter and peaked above $4.20 per gallon just before Osama bin Laden was killed in May. Prices dropped in May and June and eventually hit below $4 per gallon, but prices became more volatile in July, impacted by a variety of market factors, including a spike in the price per barrel of crude oil.
The decline in price per gallon over the past week mirrored a drop in the price per barrel of oil, as it dropped following the financial fallout from the U.S. credit rating downgrade.
But the price per barrel of oil rose $1.61 to $80.91 per barrel on Wednesday morning, as supplies dropped, according to The Associated Press.
