A Venezuelan accountant was sentenced Wednesday to 14 months in federal prison for helping to cover up a Connecticut-based pyramid scheme involving hundreds of millions of dollars from a pension fund for Venezuela’s state oil workers, The Associated Press reports.
Juan Carlos Guillen Zerpa admitted that he was paid to falsify a document on behalf of Francisco Illarramendi, a Venezuelan-American financier who used unregistered hedge funds in Stamford, as cover for one of the biggest frauds in state history.
