Norwalk medical floss maker Thornton International has partnered with a Connecticut renewable energy company to put six wind turbines on the roof of its headquarters, which is already home to 263 solar panels.
C Solar, based in Westport, will install the wind turbines which can generate 16,500 kilowatt hours of power per year. The turbines can generate power with a minimum of 2 mph wind.
When completed the entire Thorton solar/wind project is expected to generate 87,512 kWH, which will equal an anticipated savings of $15,750 annually.
“As business people,” said Brett Thornton, Thornton International’s vice president, in a statement. “We want to do what we can to protect the environment; however, every decision we make must be done so with a cost benefit analysis. Glenn and C Solar worked closely with us to design a system that is commercially viable and will significantly reduce our energy costs after a brief investment recovery period. It’s a win-win all the way around; for the environment, for Thornton International and for our customers”
