Connecticut fined 261 out-of-state companies in the recently completed fiscal year for not registering with the state secretary’s office to do business in the state, officials announced.
The fines, the result of a joint effort between the offices of State Attorney General George Jepsen and Secretary of State Denise Merrill, totaled more than $1.3 million. That was down slightly from fiscal year 2012.
“Out-of state companies who fail to register and do not obtain a certificate of authority to do business here undercut Connecticut companies and make it difficult to provide accountability for Connecticut consumers,” Merrill said in a statement.
Companies that violate the law can be fined of $300 for each month the company is doing business in the state without legal authority.
The largest fine last year was $54,570, paid by MTS Systems Corp., a Minnesota manufacturer of testing systems. Ventura Foods LLC of California paid the second-largest fine of $35,235.
