CT faces special election for 7 vacancies

Wednesday’s installation of the incoming governor’s administrative slate that includes six recently elected lawmakers means voters in some parts of the state can look forward to special elections in coming weeks, the secretary of the state says.

Susan Bysewicz, whose term officially ends Wednesday, said her office has received seven official resignations from two state senators and five state representatives who were recruited to join the administration of Gov.-elect Dan Malloy.

Under state law, Malloy has until Jan. 15 to set the date for a special election to fill the vacancies, Bysewicz said.

The special elections will occur in the following districts in the State Senate:  District 6, covering the communities of Berlin, New Britain, and part of Farmington; and District 27, covering parts of Darien and Stamford.

Bysewicz said her office had not yet received an official letter of resignation from State Sen. Thomas Gaffey of Meriden, who faces larceny charges for alleged double-dipping in reimbursement for legislative travel expenses.
