CT extends search for new education leader

Connecticut officials say they are extending the search for the state’s next education commissioner after fewer than 10 people applied for the position. The Associated Press reports.

A search committee of the state Department of Education decided to keep taking applications beyond the May 6 deadline so it has more options to present to Gov. Dannel P. Malloy. The AP said, citing The Hartford Courant.

State Board of Education Chairman Allan Taylor, who heads the committee, said some potential applicants might have been deterred by news of possible deep state budget cuts.

He hopes those people will apply once those budget issues are resolved.

Interim Commissioner George Coleman has held the spot since Mark McQuillan resigned in January. Coleman does not want the $175,000-per-year job permanently.

Malloy hasn’t set a deadline on when he expects to name the new commissioner.
