CT electric rates dropping

The Connecticut Department of Public Utility Control announced today that electricity rates in 2011 will drop 7.8 percent for Connecticut Light & Power customers and 1.5 percent for United Illuminating customers.

The CL&P residential customer savings will be $10.41 a month while a UI residential customer will save $2.51 per month. The savings will be significantly more for business customers who use more electricity.

These are the standard supply rates for the state regulated utility companies, but DPUC, CL&P and UI have encouraged their customers to switch to competitive electric suppliers for their rates, as they tend to be much cheaper than the standard rate.

In 2010, the number of business and residential customers switching to competitive suppliers went from 18 percent of all customers to 36 percent.
