CT dry dock gets $1.4M to expand

A New London shipyard received a $1.4 million federal grant to expand its dry dock, authorities said Thursday.

Thames Shipyard Repair Co. is getting the money through the U.S. Maritime Administration’s 2010 grant program for small shipyards, said Senators Chris Dodd and Joseph Lieberman.

“This important grant is a major win for New London and our state: not only will it help improve operations at Thames Shipyard, but will create or sustain nearly a hundred jobs for Connecticut workers,” Dodd said in a statement.

Thames Shipyard builds and repairs vessels for the Navy, Electric Boat and Cross Sound Ferry, among others.

Congressmen Rosa DeLauro, Joe Courtney and Chris Murphy joined in urging federal transportation officials to approve the grant.
