CT disability rolls among slowest growing

Between 2008 and 2013, the number of Social Security disability beneficiaries in Connecticut grew by just under 12 percent — the second slowest growth in the country, according to an analysis by an Oklahoma staffing firm.

Connecticut had 81,570 beneficiaries in 2013, up from 72,928 in 2008, according to Express Employment Professionals. That made Connecticut one of just eight states with an increase under 15 percent over that time.

The sharpest increase was observed in Washington, D.C., which saw its disability rolls grow by more than 30 percent. The slowest growth was in West Virginia, which saw a 6 percent increase over those five years.

Across the country, nearly 9 million people received federal disability benefits in 2013.
