Connecticut lawmakers return today to Hartford for a special session on the state budget deficit, but Democratic leaders say there won’t be a vote on the governor’s proposed spending cuts.
Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell called Tuesday’s session, but House Speaker Christopher Donovan says there won’t be any action her plan to reduce the estimated $467 million deficit. He says lawmakers intend to call another special session, possibly before Christmas, to vote on their own deficit plan.
Leaders of the Democratic majority say Rell’s proposal would slash more than 5,000 jobs in the state. Rell’s budget office disputed the claim.
Democrats also say their plan wouldn’t cut state aid to cities and towns like Rell’s would. (AP)
