CT colleges: No hoverboards on campus

The “hoverboard” industry took another blow this week as the overseer of 17 state universities decided this week to ban them from campuses.

The Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system office said in a statement Tuesday that the devices – most of which are more akin to two-wheeled scooters than true hoverboards – are a safety concern.

There have been various reports of the batteries in the devices catching fire.

CSCU noted that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is investigating the devices.

Inside Higher Ed reported this month that a dozen schools around the country have banned hoverboards.

Last week, online retail giant Amazon offered refunds for any hoverboards sold on its site.
