CT close to having a budget

House lawmakers are expected to convene at 11 a.m. today to review a state spending proposal, and members planned to immediately caucus as a prelude to a possible budget vote this afternoon.

House was lawmakers and representatives from Gov. M. Jodi Rell‘s office continue to negotiate in hopes of reaching a budget deal before Tuesday.

House Speaker Christopher G. Donovan (D-Meriden) and Senate President Pro Tem Donald E. Williams Jr. (D-Brooklyn) issued a joint statement this morning.

“There have been extensive budget negotiations throughout the weekend. We are in the process of finalizing the remaining details, and talks with the governor are continuing. We expect a vote in both chambers today and we look forward to resolving the budget crisis prior to Sept. 1.”

Closed-door talks took place Sunday at the state Capitol, several days after Rell helped break a monthslong impasse, by reluctantly agreeing to higher income taxes on the wealthy.

In return, she’s asked the legislature’s Democratic leaders to come up with $520 million in additional cuts, but it’s not clear if they will be able to do that.
