Bridgeport’s City Council has announced new parking regulations for large commercial vehicles on the city’s streets in an effort to improve public safety and keep sidewalks and roadways accessible.
Under the new restrictions, large commercial vehicles, including tractor-trailers, are prohibited from parking, standing or being left unattended on any public street, except if they are actively making deliveries, disabled or performing utility work or emergency service.
Any violation carries a $250 citation.
Utility trailers cannot be left unhitched to a vehicle on a public road between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.
Standard trucks carrying equipment, appliances or garbage cannot be parked on public streets between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.
Violations of these provisions carry a $125 citation.
The new regulations also address pick-up trucks with make-shift walls to increase carrying capacity. These are prohibited when operating or parked on public rights-of-way.
The city council says that by modernizing outdated provisions and addressing emerging issues involving these vehicles, the ordinance is designed to provide clearer expectations for vehicle owners while strengthening the city's ability to protect public safety and preserve neighborhood quality of life.
The ordinance will go into effect on August 6.
