The American Civil Liberties Union of Connecticut has asked for data from Berlin, New Haven, Waterbury and three other municipalities and the state police as part of a national effort to determine how often local law enforcement agencies use cell phones to track people, The Associated Press reports.
The group says it also has sent Freedom of Information Act requests to the state and departments in Danbury, Willimantic and New London.
The group says most of the departments were chosen to get an even geographical distribution of information.
The requests seek information showing how often individuals are tracked by their cell phones, and whether police have rules for deciding when a cell phone may be tracked.
The ACLU said it is sending hundreds of open records requests to law enforcement agencies in 31 states across the country.
