Stamford’s historic Avon Theatre is getting a facelift.
The city broke ground on a redevelopment of the 87-year old cinema with a project called Avon Recreated.
Plans for the project include a modernization of the building, three screening venues, an education center, café, wine bar and community gathering space.
Construction is expected to be substantially complete in September 2027, with a public reopening in late October 2027.
During construction, the institution says it will continue to host screenings at other nearby venues including the Ferguson Library, Bruce Museum and Mill River Park. The Avon on Tour initiative will also feature filmmaker conversations, educational programs, and community events.
It’s the second time in its recent history the cinema has been revived. After closing in 1999, the building was purchased in 2001 by the Royce Family Foundation.
The refurbished Avon Theatre Film Center reopened in 2004 as a nonprofit, member-supported movie house.
According to its latest 990 tax filing, Avon Theatre reported $6.7 million in revenue, a $4.9 million surplus and 21 employees in fiscal year 2025.
