Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford has named Shannon Sullivan as its next president and chief executive officer, the hospital’s Board of Directors announced Tuesday.
Sullivan will succeed James E. Shmerling, who in
March announced plans to retire at the end of the year after a decade at the helm.
Sullivan will officially assume her new role on Jan. 12, 2026. She currently serves as president and chief operating officer of Women & Infants Hospital, part of Care New England in Rhode Island. She has nearly 20 years of healthcare leadership experience, with a reputation for innovation and patient-centered care.
At Women & Infants Hospital, Sullivan oversaw major operational initiatives, including construction of a field hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This is a transformational moment for Connecticut Children’s,” said Jon Rubin, chair of the corporate board of directors. “Shannon’s experience, vision and values align with our mission, and her leadership will propel us forward as we continue to care for children and families in Connecticut and the region.”
Sullivan’s appointment comes as Connecticut Children’s prepares to open a new $320 million clinical tower in early 2026. The hospital said the facility will expand its capacity, integrate advanced medical technologies and strengthen its position as a leading pediatric healthcare provider in the Northeast.
“It is an honor to join Connecticut Children’s at such an extraordinary time in its history,” Sullivan said in a statement.
Tina Brown-Stevenson, chair of the board’s search committee, praised Shmerling for his leadership in positioning the organization for continued growth.
“We would not have been able to attract such a dynamic leader without Jim’s dedication and vision,” Brown-Stevenson said. “Shannon is now well positioned to continue that growth and ensure Connecticut Children’s remains a trusted leader in pediatric healthcare for generations to come.”
