CT child-care providers getting $7M

The 5,500 child-care providers in Connecticut’s Care4Kids program are collecting one-time payments totaling $7 million from stimulus funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the governor’s office says.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell’s office said Wednesday the state Department of Social Services mailed checks Friday ranging from $300 to $49,000 to licensed group and family care homes, child-care centers, school-based providers and summer camps enrolled in the state-run program.

The payment amount depends on the size of the facility, number of clients and national accreditation status.

The $7 million is part of the $13.7 million the state received in federal child care stimulus funding. The remaining money went to offset deficits in the Care4Kids program. The providers are encouraged to spend their money to reduce fees, increase salaries, improve play areas, purchase supplies and equipment, and make energy-saving upgrades.
