Connecticut’s two resort casinos started off the new year the same way the last five started — with decreased slot revenues.
Slot revenues at Mohegan Sun in the Uncasville section of Montville were down 12 percent in January compared to January 2010 while slot revenues at Foxwoods in Mashantucket were down 6 percent. Both casinos have seen decreases in year-over-year revenues for the past five Januaries.
The drop was particularly notable for Foxwoods because the property had increased its year-over-year slot revenue for four of the previous six months. Its slot win of $48.5 million was the lowest for a January since 1997 when the casino had 2,000 fewer slot machines.
“Despite the record-setting snowfall, we were still able to achieve consistently high visitation and occupancy, as well as sell out a number of our shows throughout the month,” Foxwoods President and CEO Scott Butera said in a statement. “We are pleased with our results and will continue to provide our guests with Foxwoods’ signature five-star service, as well as an unmatched entertainment experience, and we’re confident this approach will continue to resonate with our customers.”
Mohegan’s 12 percent dropped continued the casino’s trend of continual year-over-year decreases for every month since June 2008.
The only exception was this past July when Mohegan posted a 2 percent increase over July 2009, although the casino benefitted from a fifth Saturday that month. This January’s $54.5 million in slot win was the lowest for a January since 2002.
In their required contributions to the state, Foxwoods contributed $12.7 million while Mohegan contributed $14.3 million from January’s revenues.
