A West Hartford-based cannabis company plans to construct a cultivation facility in Stratford adjacent to a production facility owned by a competitor, according to an application filed with the town’s Zoning Commission.
Budr Cultivation LLC — controlled by Budr Management LLC and Budr Holding Company III LLC — is proposing an 11,543-square-foot addition to a 40,476-square-foot building at 305 Hathaway Drive. The property is owned by Missouri-based Borealis Cannabis by Shangri-La.
Budr Holding Company III LLC is controlled by Derrick Gibbs and Carl Tirella, co-founders of Budr Cannabis.
Borealis purchased the former Porter & Chester Institute building for $5 million in October, according to property records, and opened a cultivation facility there the same month.
Tirella said Budr plans to purchase about 6,000 square feet of the building from Borealis in June or July for an undisclosed price, and would own the new grow space.
He said the two companies would operate independently, with separate entrances, security systems, access points and delivery operations.
“There will be clear delineation between the two operations,” Tirella said.
Budr operates six dispensaries in Connecticut and two in New York.
Shangri-La, which operates a cultivation facility in Missouri and owns 14 dispensaries across Connecticut, Missouri and Ohio, plans to sell four unused grow rooms in the Stratford building to Budr, said President Kepal Patel.
“This is a win-win arrangement for both companies and the Connecticut cannabis market as we work to meet consumer demand for premium cannabis products,” he said. “It’s common business practice for producers to sell their products to each other’s dispensaries and work together to give consumers quality options.”
The Zoning Commission is scheduled to discuss the application at a continued public hearing on May 13.
