Connecticut lawmakers are considering a bill that would prohibit hydraulic fracturing waste from being treated, discharged, disposed of, or stored in the state, The Associated Press reports.
The General Assembly’s Energy and Technology Committee is scheduled to vote Thursday on the proposed legislation.
Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is defined in the bill as the process of pumping any fluid into or under the surface of the ground to create factures in the rock to produce or recover oil or gas.
Hydraulic fracturing waste can include any wastewater, wastewater solids, sludge, drill cuttings and any other byproducts from the fracking process.
While fracking is not currently occurring in Connecticut, environmental groups say lawmakers need to be proactive. They’ve also voiced concerns about out-of-state operators trying to dispose waste here, potentially creating pollution problems.
