CT begins storm cleanup, damage review

Cleanup efforts and damage assessments are underway in eastern Connecticut as flooded rivers and streams begin to recede after this week’s storm, The Associated Press reports.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell toured parts of flooded Stonington and Jewett City on Wednesday and promised to help businesses and homeowners get disaster aid.

Many roads and schools remain closed Thursday in Stonington, where flooding forced some evacuations and largely cut off the coastal town from its neighbors.

Officials in Griswold say they narrowly saved the Jewett City sewage treatment plant from potential damage and overflow problems from the flooded Quinebaug River.

Officials in Middletown are keeping an eye on the Connecticut River, which is expected to crest at about 6 feet above flood stage Friday morning.
