CT bank names first chief AI officer

Middletown-based Liberty Bank has named its first chief artificial intelligence officer, expanding the leadership team overseeing the lender’s growing investment in AI.

Marc Sylvain, who joined Liberty in 2024 as senior vice president of strategic planning and innovation, will lead the bank’s AI strategy and oversee its newly created AI Center of Excellence, the bank announced Wednesday.

The appointment follows Liberty’s launch of the AI Center of Excellence, which is responsible for identifying, governing and implementing AI initiatives across the nearly $9 billion-asset bank while ensuring projects meet regulatory, risk management and business requirements.

Sylvain will report directly to President and CEO David Glidden. He previously led Liberty’s Salesforce implementation and has more than 20 years of banking experience, including prior roles at TD Bank.

Liberty recently said it plans to invest up to $3 million over the next 12 to 18 months in artificial intelligence initiatives aimed at improving efficiency, accelerating customer service and helping employees automate routine tasks while keeping bankers responsible for key decisions.

The bank has already begun deploying AI applications to speed commercial loan underwriting, automate software testing and identify new commercial lending opportunities.

“As Liberty’s first-ever Chief AI Officer, my goal is to drive the responsible adoption of AI across the bank,” Sylvain said in a statement.

Liberty, founded in 1825, has more than $9 billion in assets, 51 branches in Connecticut and Massachusetts, and more than 900 employees.
