CT awards to honor gov’t buildings

Three Connecticut foundations have developed a new awards program to recognize state and municipal buildings that make drastic efforts to reduce energy consumption.

The Power of Change Award program builds upon the Lead by Example program launched by the state in 2011 to reduce energy use in state buildings by 10 percent by 2013 and an additional 10 percent by 2018.

The awards program is a collaboration between The Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation of New Haven, the Hampshire Foundation of Hartford, and the Common Sense Fund of Greenwich.

The awards are split into two categories: municipal and state buildings. Honors are given separately to different types of buildings, such as courthouses and wastewater treatment plants. An addition award is given in each category for the most inventive idea in reducing energy consumption.

The state winners will be announced on April 9, and the municipal winners will be announced in late May.
