CT awards area munis $5.8M to rehab blighted properties

Five cities in New Haven and Middlesex counties will receive $5.8 million in state funding to clean up and redevelop blighted properties, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced Monday.

Middletown, Meriden, Waterbury and the lower Naugatuck Valley communities of Derby and Ansonia are among 14 Connecticut cities and towns receiving a total of $13.6 million for “brownfield” properties that have been vacant and deteriorating for decades, Malloy said. The properties encompass 89 acres in total.

“We can add value in our communities by making smart investments that repurpose these properties, resulting in a boost for local economies and spurring growth and private investments,” Malloy said in a statement.

All of the funds will be awarded by the state Department of Economic and Community Development and include $12.1 million for remediation and redevelopment and $1.5 million to assess possible projects.

Connecticut has invested more than $220 million in brownfield redevelopment since 2012, creating more than 3,000 permanent jobs and more than 15,000 construction jobs, the governor said.

New Haven and Middlesex county grants include:

  • Meriden: $2 million to abate and raze part of a former hospital structure and parking garage on 5.6 acres at 1 King Place to prepare it for private mixed-use redevelopment. The city has also been awarded a $2 million loan to complete the required remediation of the site before it is conveyed to the city’s development partner.
  • Waterbury: $1 million to remediate the 3.4-acre former RISDON manufacturing facility at 2100 S. Main St. that was the site of a recent major fire. The remediation will address a major public health hazard and prepare the parcel for redevelopment.
  • Ansonia: $200,000 to investigate 2.7 acres at 65 Main St.
  • Derby: $200,000 to investigate 19 acres on Main Street related to the city’s downtown redevelopment plans.
  • Middletown: $200,000 to investigate a 0.3-acre parcel at 248 William St.
  • Waterbury: $200,000 to investigate the former Bristol Babcock facility, a 6.6-acre parcel at 40 Bristol St.
