State utility regulators have approved a plan devised by the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology Inc. in East Hartford to hand out $10.8 million in capital grants to 10 Fairfield County communities to improve their energy reliability and costs.
The Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology (CCAT) devised the scheme under a contract from the U.S. Energy Department.
The state Department of Public Utility Control recently approved CCAT’s application to distribute the grants for 30 facilities – mostly schools and other public buildings – that would generate enough electricity to power more than 20,000 homes.
Once installed, the power-generation systems would supply electricity during emergencies or when during periods of peak demand to stabilize the energy grid and reduce prices in the region, CCAT said.
Eventually the program will expand to other regions of Connecticut and the country, the organization said.
