CT AG opposes relicensing nuclear reactors

Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen said Thursday he opposes relicensing two Indian Point nuclear reactors in Buchanan, N.Y. for health and safety reasons.

Jepsen raised concerns for Connecticut residents in comments to the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Atomic Safety and Licensing Board, where the relicensing application is under review.

Approximately one-third of the state’s population, including residents in Litchfield and Fairfield counties, is within a 50-mile radius of the plant, owned by Entergy Nuclear Northeast.

Jepsen opposes relicensing until a thorough investigation is made of the facility’s environmental impacts, including spent storage, the threat to public drinking water and population relocation in the event of an accident.
