The Connecticut AFL-CIO executive board says it’s named union veteran Sal Luciano as president.
Luciano, the former executive vice president and executive director of Council 4 AFSCME, will lead the Rocky Hill-based labor union in place of Lori Pelletier, who resigned in November. Luciano served in the post on an interim basis until his permanent appointment during a special meeting on Friday.
Luciano’s professional career began as a social worker for the state Department of Children and Youth Services in 1980. During his tenure, he investigated cases involving abuse and neglect of children.
In 1989, he was elected president of AFSCME Local 2663, and was appointed executive director of Council 4 in 2001. Luciano then retired in May 2018.
In addition to Luciano’s appointment on Friday, the Connecticut AFL-CIO board also filled serval vacancies, naming Jan Hochadel executive vice president, Tom Wilkinson first vice president, David Roche general vice president and Tiana Ocasio as executive secretary.
They will each serve four year terms, which began in 2017. All officers will be up for election at the biennial constitutional convention in 2021.
