CT adds 6.4K May jobs; 6% jobless rate

Connecticut employers added more jobs in May – 6,400 – pushing the state’s unemployment down to 6 percent, state labor authorities say.

The state’s May tally of nonfarm employment stood at a seasonally adjusted 1,691,800 jobs – 26,100 more than in May 2014, the state Department of Labor (DOL) said Thursday.

The state’s jobless rate in April was 6.2 percent; it was 6.6 percent in May 2014.

“Connecticut year-to-date job gains are showing their strongest performance since the employment recovery began in 2010,” said DOL Research Director Andy Condon. “The state’s jobless rate has fallen quickly in the last two months, even with strong labor force growth, and it appears to be converging closer to the U.S. jobless rate’’ of 5.5 percent in May.

Six of the state’s so-called jobs “super-sectors’’ posted jobs gains in May, led by trade, transportation & utilities (3,200), followed by retail trade, with retail trade (1,900); construction and mining (2,400); leisure and hospitality (1,200); professional and business services (400); information (300), and other services (200).

Manufacturing led the decliners, shedding 1,000 jobs last month, with government down 200 and health services off by 100 jobs, DOL said.
