Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen and Consumer Counsel Elin Swanson Katz Thursday accused the retail subsidiary of wholesale electric generator NRG Energy, Inc. of using deceptive marketing practices in signing up electric customers.
The complaint calls for the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority to investigate whether Energy Plus Holdings, LLC misled customers when signing them up for its electric supply business.
Jepsen and Katz accuse Energy Plus of claiming ratepayers who switch to its electric supply service will pay lower than the prevailing utility rate on their electric bills, when the Energy Plus rate turns out to be much higher.
In a statement released Thursday evening, Energy Plus denied any wrongdoing.
“Energy Plus complies with all laws and regulations in offering our services,” said Paul Frantz, chief marketing officer for Energy Plus. “We will cooperate with the offices of the Connecticut Attorney General and Consumer Counsel.”
New Jersey-based NRG Energy, which operates nine power plants in Connecticut, acquired Energy Plus in September.
