CSUS trustees approve 2.5 percent tuition hike

More than 36,600 students in the Connecticut State University System will pay 2.5 percent more in tuition and fees starting this fall, along with a new 2.5 percent charge if they put those expenses on their credit cards, The Associated Press reports.

The system’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously Thursday to approve the tuition increase and new credit card transaction fee for students at Central, Western, Eastern and Southern Connecticut State Universities.

They also added lab fees for nursing students, calling it necessary to provide supplies and maintenance for those labs.

The CSUS trustees’ decision comes three weeks after University of Connecticut trustees also adopted a 2.5 percent tuition increase for that school’s approximately 30,000 students.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s budget proposal would cut the state’s allocations to UConn and the CSUS schools by tens of millions of dollars. Trustees on both boards had previously said they hoped to avoid tuition increases for their students in 2011-12, but that the proposed budget cuts made it unavoidable.

CSUS board Vice Chairman Richard Balducci said Thursday the panel did not want to cut too deeply into academic programs, though they were disappointed that they could not keep tuition at the current levels.
