Connecticut State University System Chancellor David G. Carter is set to retire on March 1, authorities say.

Carter previously had notified the CSUS board of trustees he would retire no later than Sept. 1.

He told the board in a letter that “my health, and my increasing desire to spend more time enjoying my grandchildren” hastened his departure timetable.

Carter is the former president of Eastern Connecticut State University, one of four colleges in the state university system. He was named chancellor in February 2006.
