CRRA rewards recyclers with $400K

The Connecticut Resources Recovery Authority doled out $400,000 to 64 cities and towns last week for their recycling efforts.

The CRRA paid out $5 for every ton a city or town recycled during the fiscal year ending June 30, which had the highest recycling rate since the Mid-Connecticut Project started accepting recyclables in 1992.

For the third straight year, West Hartford led the efforts by recycling 6,003 tons, good enough for a $30,000 payout. The towns of Sharon and Salisbury, which share a transfer station, recycle the most per capita at 276 pounds per residents, for a total payout of $4,800.

Other notable recyclers were Manchester with 5,006 tons recycles for a $25,000 payout; Hartford with 4,282 tons recycled for a $21,400 payout; Glastonbury with 3,699 tones recycled for a $18,500 payout; and Enfield with 2,995 tons recycled for a $15,000 payout.

In all, 83,856 tons were recycled at the Mid-Connecticut Project, the state’s recycling a trash-to-energy power plant.

Since 2008, the CCRA paid out more than $1.6 million in recycling payments. The payout come in lieu of the $69 per ton charge cities and towns must pay to dispose of their garbage.
