Cox abandons wireless phone service

Cox Communications scrapped its wireless phone service on Wednesday, citing an inability to compete in a rapidly narrowing wireless marketplace now dominated by Verizon and AT&T.

The third-largest U.S. cable TV company, Atlanta-based Cox said its television, high speed Internet, residential phone and commercial services will not be affected.

The company will continue providing service for its wireless customers through March of next year and special offers will be available to current customers as they transition to other wireless providers.

“Cox is working to make this transition as seamless and easy as possible for our customers,” said Len Barlik, executive vice president of product development and management, in a statement.

Customers will receive $150 credits on their bill for each line of wireless phone service disconnected. In addition, all early termination fees will be waived.

Unveiled in Connecticut last May, the company had introduced its wireless service using the Sprint network to less than half of its six-million customers to date.
