Covidien gets FDA approval for surgical device

Health care products company Covidien Ltd., which has operations in Wallingford, said today it received Food and Drug Administration clearance to sell a port which can hold multiple instruments during laparoscopic surgery.

Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive method of operating in which a lens system is used guide surgeons, therefore requiring only small incisions for instruments.

The company said its SILS Port Multiple Instrument Access Port can be fitted through a small abdominal incision and allow access for up to three laparoscopic instruments through the same incision.

Covidien is relocating its headquarters from Bermuda to Ireland. It became an independent, publicly traded company in June 2007 by splitting from parent company Tyco International.
