Covanta to provide Enfield waste-to-energy

Enfield has contracted with New Jersey-based Covanta Energy Corp. to dispose of the town’s municipal solid waste into waste-to-energy facilities.

Covanta is the largest owner of waste-to-energy facility in North America – where refuse is burned for energy – and operates plants in Bristol, Wallingford, and Preston. The company signed a similar agreement with West Hartford last week.

With its latest contracts, Covanta manages 150,000 tons of waste and 20,000 tons of recyclables from all its Connecticut clients. The others include Guilford, Madison, East Hartford, West Hartford, Enfield, Newington, Southbury, Windsor Locks and Vernon.

Enfield expects to lower its disposal fees with Covanta, the town said in the contract announcement.
