Consumer complaints to BBB grew in 2010

Frustrated cable- and satellite-TV and cell phone customers drove complaint volume up 10 percent at Better Business Bureaus in North America, the nonprofit business-consumer liaison says.

Consumers filed 1.1 million complaints against North American businesses in 2010, the BBB said in its annual survey of complaint data.

Consumers on the continent also turned to the BBB more than 87 million times for help researching businesses, up 37 percent from 2009, the organization said.  Research on roofing contractors, general contractors and mortgage brokers was the most requested.

“The increase in complaints nationwide also shows a growing number of consumers are relying on BBB for help resolving disputes,” said Connecticut BBB President Paulette Scarpetti.

The cable and satellite TV industry drew the largest number of complaints with 30,985, the cell phone industry ranked second with 27,293 and new car dealers were third, with 24,698 complaints across the nation.
