Conopco Inc. of Shelton plans to close its local facility and move operations to its New Jersey location.
Gina McKay, human resources business partner for the company, indicated the decision will mean 90 layoffs in a Workers Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notice to the state Department of Labor.
Conopco is part of Unilever, which makes a variety of products for consumers, from personal care items to food such as ice cream. Unilever’s brands include Dove, Axe, Vaseline, Suave, Q-tips, Lipton, and Klondike, for example.
The Shelton facility is at 3 Corporate Dr., and the company plans to permanently close it next year, around June 30, 2021.
The company offered all employees the opportunity to relocate to its Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey location, and 45 workers agreed to do so.
However, 90 employees did not want to move, and therefore will be subject to layoffs, according to the notice.
Layoffs will start around Oct. 15, 2020, and continue through next June. The layoffs are considered permanent, and no bumping rights exist, according to McKay.
