Connecticut is ranked No. 27 out of 50 states in pedestrian safety, according to a report by The National Complete Streets Coalition.
In terms of the nation’s largest metro areas, Hartford ranks No. 38 out of 51.
From 2003-2012, Connecticut had 351 residents killed while walking. Statistically, older adults, children, and minorities are the most at risk pedestrians, according to the report.
Majority of deaths occur from roadways that are designed specifically for cars, with little attention paid to people walking or biking. Communities can make streets safer by adding bicycle lanes and improving crosswalks by reducing cross distances, according to the report.
