Connecticut Children’s to unveil its new 12-bed psychiatric unit

Calling it a “milestone for pediatric mental health care” in the state, Connecticut Children’s plans to officially mark the opening of its new 12-bed medical psychiatric unit on Tuesday.

The new unit, located within its facility at 282 Washington St. in Hartford, will be called the Medical Psychiatric Integrated Care Area and “responds to the urgent need for improved mental health services for children,” hospital officials said.

“Often, children facing complex medical challenges also grapple with psychological issues that deserve special attention,” the release states. The unit will enable the hospital to address “both aspects of a child’s well-being, providing integrated care that goes beyond traditional medical treatment.”

The hospital said support from the state, local corporations and individual donors funded the unit.

Connecticut Children’s will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the hospital Tuesday at 11 a.m. with families of patients, and hospital and state officials, including Gov. Ned Lamont. Tours of the new facility will also be provided.
