Connecticut Chapter of the Northeast Organic Farming Association

Mission: The Connecticut Chapter of the Northeast Organic Farming Association (CT NOFA) is an independent nonprofit dedicated to developing local sustainable agriculture and strengthening the practices of ecologically sound farming, gardening and land care. Its efforts aim to give consumers increased access to safe and healthy food.

Background:  CT NOFA was founded in 1982, with about 50 members, as one of the seven state chapters of NOFA.  Currently, its members include approximately 800 farmers, gardeners, land care professionals and consumers who would like to see more local and organic food in Connecticut. Every year since CT NOFA formed, it has held a winter conference to educate the public about organic methods. The organization has also printed and distributed the CT NOFA Guide to Farms and Food, which connects consumers with the state’s organic and sustainable farms.  From 1989 to 2002, CT NOFA certified organic farms in the state of Connecticut.  In 1999, CT NOFA started the Organic Land Care Program in collaboration with NOFA/Mass, www.organiclandcare.net.  The Land Care Program currently accredits about 550 land care professionals in 19 states.

Major Fundraiser: CT NOFA’s work is grant funded. The organization does not specifically arrange fundraising events, however, it does try to informally raise money through several of its educational events including Taste! Organic Connecticut, a celebration of organic food and farming that will be held on September 19th at Manchester Community College, and its annual conference in March.

Volunteer Needs: CT NOFA encourages volunteers to get involved in all of its events.
