ConnectiCare names new president; interim leader Wachtelhausen to retire

Farmington health insurer ConnectiCare has a new leader.

The company, owned by New York-based EmblemHealth, announced Friday that Mark Meador is its next president.

Meador will oversee the health plan’s business in Connecticut and Massachusetts. He succeeds Roberta Wachtelhausen, who has served as interim president since November 2022.

As part of the leadership transition, Wachtelhausen will retire from ConnectiCare. However, she will continue to serve on the board and act as an advisor to ConnectiCare subsidiary WellSpark, a corporate wellness program provider she founded.

Meador has been with ConnectiCare since 2019, serving as the company’s general counsel. Before that, he spent over 20 years with Aetna in various executive positions.
Earlier in his career, he held leadership positions with other insurance carriers, including Prudential, and worked for a private law firm in Atlanta, Georgia.

“Mark is an experienced leader who deeply understands our business and the importance of working closely with policy, government, and business leaders,” said Michael Palmateer, president of health plans at the EmblemHealth family of companies. “He has worked extensively in Connecticut’s regulatory environment and is uniquely positioned to represent us.”

Meador’s appointment represents the latest in a string of leadership changes for ConnectiCare since December 2021, when former President Eric Galvin left the company suddenly.

Galvin was replaced by Karen Moran, who left the company about a year later. That’s when Wachtelhausen was named interim president.

Meador holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Emory University and is a graduate of the Emory University School of Law.
