Farmington health insurer Connecticare has launched a new pricing calculator that aims to make health care cost information more transparent and accessible to consumers.
The insurer’s new online tool estimates the cost of 300 common medical services based on Connecticut market data at medical locations statewide. The tool also estimates customers’ cost share based on their health benefits plan and deductible.
The calculator, for example, shows that the cost of an endoscopy in Connecticut can range from $800 to more than $4,000. By providing patients with that information it empowers them to make more informed decisions about where to seek health care and how to maximize their health benefits, company officials say.Â
Such cost calculators are not totally unique and are being offered by other insurers as well including Cigna and Anthem.
