Conn. Senate Passes $19 Billion Budget

Facing a midnight adjournment, the Connecticut Senate has passed a revised $19 billion budget for 2010, The Associated Press reports.

The one-year tax-and-spending plan passed on a 19-16 vote. It now moves to the House of Representatives for a planned vote late Wednesday.

The 11th-hour agreement was negotiated between the General Assembly’s majority Democrats and Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell in recent weeks and finalized on Wednesday, the final day of the 2010 legislative session.

Legislative Republicans have criticized the budget, saying it relies on short-term fixes and does nothing to streamline state government.

The budget, originally passed in September as part of a two-year plan, had a $2 billion hole. Proponents say they’ve balanced it without raising additional taxes or cutting state aid to cities and towns.
